GROTON — Chief Louis J. Fusaro Jr. and the Town of Groton Police Department announce the arrest of a New London man wanted on outstanding extraditable warrants in Rhode Island and Virginia.
On Sunday, June 21, at approximately 10 p.m., Officer B. Albee conducted a routine motor vehicle stop on a silver Hyundai Elantra with a Rhode Island registration plate and a broken tail lamp, in the area of Long Hill Road and Route 12.
Officers extensively checked records to confirm the license or identity of the driver, based on the name provided, but were unsuccessful. A female passenger, the car’s registered owner, gave officers permission to search the vehicle for documents that would help to identify the driver.
Officer Albee located a debit card, and determined it belonged to the driver. Police confirmed his identity as JEFFREY BURGOS, AGE 38, of NEW LONDON.
Police then learned that BURGOS was wanted two extraditable warrants out of Rhode Island, and one extraditable warrant out of Virginia held by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Additionally, the records check showed New London Police held four active arrest warrants for BURGOS. All the warrants were found to be for failure to register as a sexual offender, which is a felony in Connecticut.
BURGOS was taken into custody without incident, processed, and is being held at Groton Police Department on bonds totaling over $750,000. BURGOS’ passenger was released from the scene with no action taken against her.
BURGOS also was charged with the following:
- Improper Tail Lamps
- Operation of a Motor Vehicle without a License
- Interfering with an Officer
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
