The Groton Police Marine Unit serves to provide and maintain a safe environment for boaters and persons utilizing the Thames and Mystic Rivers, including visitors along the shoreline. The vessel is deployed for patrols, search and rescue or recovery, marine accident response, waterway closures, special events, escorts, infrastructure inspections, drug interdiction, and marine safety and prevention efforts. The Groton Marine Unit is part of the USCG New London Port Security Group that regularly performs security duties for critical infrastructure and assets.
The vessel is a 27’ Safe Boat which was acquired in 2012 on a FEMA Grant, and the unit boasts 15 members of the department.
