On Sunday, September 14, 2025, at approximately 10:52 p.m., Groton Emergency Dispatch received several 911 calls reporting a gunshot at the Phoenix Park Apartments, Apt. 66, 355 Long Hill Road, Groton.
As officers were quickly responding, Groton Emergency Dispatch relayed that a 911 caller, Caleb BEAN, of Apt. 64, reported he had accidentally discharged his firearm while attempting to cycle the action of his rifle. BEAN further reported that the bullet from his rifle traveled through the ceiling of his apartment, striking a female victim in the apartment directly above his.
Upon the arrival of officers, two neighbors, as well as the victim’s boyfriend, were attempting to treat the victim with a makeshift tourniquet while talking with her to keep her awake and focused. Officers immediately recognized the seriousness of a gunshot wound to the victim’s right leg, which resulted in a significant amount of blood loss. In order to mitigate what appeared to be a life-threatening injury, the responding Officers applied two tourniquets to stem and attempt to control the bleeding.
Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Lawrence & Memorial paramedics, and Groton Ambulance personnel arrived shortly thereafter to assist Groton Police. Officers utilized a foldable stretcher to remove the victim from the third floor to an ambulance waiting in the building’s parking lot. The victim was immediately transported to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for emergency surgery due to her life-threatening injuries. The victim is currently in the Intensive Care Unit of L&M Hospital.
Groton Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) responded to process the scene and assist in the investigation. Items of evidentiary value, including an AR-15-style rifle, were seized and transported to Groton Police Headquarters.
As a result of Groton Police Department’s investigation, Caleb J. BEAN, 30 years old, of Groton, CT, was arrested and transported to Groton Police Headquarters, where he was processed and held on a $250,000.00 cash or surety bond. BEAN was arraigned today at G.A. 10 in New London, CT.
