Groton Police Investigation of Bank Robbery Leads to Barricaded Suspects

On Thursday, June 12, 2025, at approximately 10:32 a.m., the Groton Police Department Emergency Communications Center received a report of a robbery that had just occurred at the Chelsea Groton Bank at 1319 Gold Star Highway in Groton. It was reported that during the robbery, two suspects inferred a weapon and passed a note to a teller demanding cash. Both suspects were wearing medical masks. They were described as white males who fled the scene in an unknown vehicle with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Officers and Detectives from the Groton Police Department developed suspect information through investigative means, leading to the discovery of the involved vehicle parked behind the Super 8 Motel, located at #173 Route 12 in Groton at approximately 5 p.m. Groton Officers and Detectives identified a room where they believed the suspects were located and began a dialogue when the suspects refused to exit their room. Shortly thereafter, Task Force Officers from the State Police Bureau of Special Investigation, who were nearby investigating an unrelated matter, arrived on the scene to assist.  After a brief exchange, the suspects advised they were armed with both firearms and explosives and refused to surrender. Groton Detectives continued communications with the barricaded suspects, and the Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit was requested for assistance. ESU Troopers arrived shortly thereafter.

Officers and Detectives assisted in evacuating the motel guests, as well as patrons and workers of nearby businesses. Southeast Area Transit (SEAT) assisted with transporting some of the evacuees to a safe location, and the Salvation Army Canteen Truck responded to aid the evacuees with meals and temporary housing. Other assisting agencies included New London State’s Attorney’s Office, Groton Ambulance, Lawrence and Memorial Medics, Groton City Fire Department, Stonington Police Department and the Connecticut State Police.

At approximately 11:05 p.m., two gunshots were heard inside the suspects’ hotel room. State Police ESU, utilizing a drone, were able to determine that both suspects were incapacitated by apparent gunshot wounds. Due to the hazards presented by the referenced explosive device, entry was made by the State Police Tactical Unit and Bomb Technicians.  Medical aid was rendered on scene, and both suspects were transported to L&M Hospital.

The suspects are identified as:

  • FALLON, Zachary, W.  06/17/1997, of Charlestown, Rhode Island.  Zachary Fallon was transported to L&M Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on 06/13/2025 at 3:59 a.m.
  • FALLON, Shaun, P. , of Charlestown, Rhode Island, 08/05/1968, remains hospitalized.

No explosive device was located during a subsequent search of the room.

This remains an active investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident or who may have observed it is encouraged to contact the Groton Police Department at 860-441-6712.

“This was an extremely dangerous and volatile situation, and I want to commend the bravery and professionalism of all the law enforcement personnel involved in bringing it to a close,” said Chief L.J. Fusaro. “We are thankful to all our mutual aid partners as well as our dispatchers and Fire and EMS personnel for their assistance during this incident. I would also like to sincerely thank the patrons and staff of the motel for their patience, understanding and cooperation. Your support helped ensure the safety of everyone in the area.”

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
