Groton Police Arrest Driver for Operating Under the Influence After Causing a Motor Vehicle Accident

On Friday, Feb. 21, 2025, at approximately 8:16 a.m., Groton Emergency Dispatch received several 911 calls reporting a motor vehicle crash in the area of Toll Gate Road and Route 12, Groton, CT.

Upon further investigation, officers learned that a 2013 Volkswagen Passat being operated by HOPE WREAD, of GROTON, was traveling westbound on Toll Gate Road toward the intersection of Route 12. Two other vehicles were stopped on Toll Gate Road at a red traffic signal. WREAD failed to stop and struck a 2023 Hyundai Tucson from behind that was being operated by Kelly Marison, of Nashua, NH. Marison’s vehicle was then pushed forward and struck a 2010 Ford F-150 being operated by Christopher Mills, of Groton. None of the operators reported being injured. Only WREAD’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

Officers suspected WREAD was operating her vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Officers had WREAD conduct Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which she failed to complete to standard. WREAD was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to Groton Police Headquarters. During processing, WREAD provided breath samples that were more than four times the legal limit of 0.08 Blood Alcohol Content (BAC).

Groton Police were assisted by other emergency responders, including personnel from the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Groton City Fire Department, and Groton Ambulance.

WREAD was processed and held on a $2,500 cash or surety bond.
