Chief L.J. Fusaro
Chief “L. J.” Fusaro is the Chief of Police, Public Safety and Emergency Management Director for the Town of Groton, Connecticut. He was formally appointed and assumed command of the department on July 27, 2015. Prior to his current position, Chief Fusaro was a Major with the Connecticut State Police, having held a variety of command positions in over 21 years of service.
Education: BA- The Citadel; MS – Western New England University
He serves on the executive boards of the New England Assn. of Chiefs of Police, the FBI-New Haven Joint Terrorism Task Force and is Vice President of the Connecticut Police Chief’s Association and he is a past President of the Police Association of Connecticut. He also serves on the CPCA Legislative Committee and is an advisory board member of the Connecticut Racial Profiling Prohibition Project. Chief Fusaro co-chairs the Local Traffic Authority with the Town Manager.
He is a graduate of the 236th Session of the FBI National Academy, the Secret Service Dignitary Protection Seminar, and the Naval Postgraduate School, Center for Homeland Defense and Security’s Executive Leaders Program and Fusion Center Leaders Program. In 2020 he received the Distinguished Chiefs Award from the Connecticut Police Commissioners Association.
Chief Fusaro retired from the Connecticut Army National Guard in 2022 after over 30 years of commissioned service. Throughout his career he held numerous command and staff assignments, his last being the Commanding Officer (Colonel) of the 169th Regiment (RTI) were he also oversaw the Subject Matter Expert cell for the U. S. Army National Guard’s Military Police branch. Upon retirement he received a brevet promotion to the rank of Brigadier General (CT).
