Bicycle Unit

The Groton Police Department Bicycle Patrol is composed of 11 members including one member who holds the rank of Sergeant and supervises the unit. The unit is equipped with black TREK bicycles marked with POLICE and flashing lights. Bicycle officers are provided necessary equipment including a high visibility uniform polo shirt, glasses for day and night, whistle, helmet and gloves.

Each member of the unit attends a 40 hour IPMBA (International Police Mountain Bike Association) Training Course. This rigorous training course teaches police cyclists how to use and ride their bicycles safely and effectively, provides bicycle handling skills, on bike drills, tactics, night operations and basic bike maintenance and on the road repairs. There is a practical skills test at the end of the training course.

The Groton Police Department Bicycle Patrol focuses on assisting the public, crime prevention, and special event assistance. Bicycle patrols can also access locations that police cars cannot easily access such as crowded areas, pedestrian zones and public parks. Bicycle patrol is also an effective community service function and allows officers to patrol neighborhoods and interact with youths.
