Naval Submarine Base to Honor President Jimmy Carter with 21-gun Salute

Groton, Conn. – On Thursday, January 9, Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE) will conduct a 21-gun salute as part of a National Day of Mourning in honor of the passing of President Jimmy Carter.

Beginning at noon, the Saluting Battery from Naval Submarine Support Facility’s (NSSF) Weapons Department will commence the 21-gun salute with its 40mm saluting battery. The salute will consist of 21 separate, loud single-round volleys fired at one-minute intervals.

The salute will take place at the Submarine Force Museum and Historic Ship Nautilus on Nautilus Pier.

The Submarine Force Museum will be closed for the National Day of Mourning and event is not open to members of the general public. It can be observed from Nautilus Overlook Park on Military Highway in Groton.
